How long has Jewellery existed?
In short nearly forever. The Cro-Magons (which replaced Neanderthals approximately 40 thousand years ago) created bracelets from bone and teeth and occasionally used Nacre for other decorative pieces. String would be used to tie the pieces together. It is the Egyptians that many consider to be the true fathers of modern jewellery.
The Egyptians and Gold Jewellery
Gold was favoured by the Egyptians for a number of reasons. It was rare, could be worked with easily and did not tarnish. The expense and craftsmanship required to produce gold jewellery in Ancient Egypt meant it was only worn by the rich, because of this Jewellery came to represent power and status. The Egyptians used symbols extensively in Jewellery to represent meaning both in life and the afterlife.
